Claude Can Now Send Gmail Emails and Manage Google Drive Files

Claude can now send emails in Gmail and manage files in Google Drive from inside a Claude conversation. Anthropic's approved Claude account announced the update on August 18, saying users can ask Claude to reply to a thread, have it draft and send the response, and control when approval is required. What Claude can do in Gmail

The Gmail connector supports more than a read-only inbox search. Anthropic lists these actions:

• Search and read emails using natural-language queries.
• Draft emails with context and formatting.
• Send, reply to, and forward messages.
• Manage labels and threads.
• List saved drafts.
• Read email metadata, including attachment metadata.

That approval boundary is the practical difference between an assistant that prepares an action and one that can complete it. A useful first workflow is to ask Claude to find a thread and draft a reply, inspect the proposed message, then authorize the send only after the content and recipients are correct.

What Claude can do in Google Drive

Users can add Drive files to a chat from the plus menu, paste a document URL, or choose a recent document. Google Docs added to chats and private projects sync from Drive and use the latest version described by the connector. Availability and organization controls

The launch post frames the Gmail and Drive actions as available on paid plans. Anthropic's current help page uses broader wording, saying Google Workspace connectors are available for all users on Claude and Claude Desktop. Because the two official surfaces describe availability at different levels, check the connectors menu in the account you plan to use rather than assuming a particular plan or rollout state. On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable the connectors before members can authenticate. Owners can also decide whether members may allow certain write actions to run without asking every time, or disable the connectors for the organization. Limits worth knowing before connecting an account

Anthropic's documentation calls out several boundaries:

• Gmail attachment content is not directly accessible; the connector exposes attachment metadata, not the attachment itself.
• Drive content is subject to existing Google permissions. Claude cannot use the connector to access files the connected account cannot already access.
• Some advanced Gmail filters may not be supported, complex queries may require multiple API calls, and performance can vary for large mailboxes.
• Claude does not process images embedded in documents, or images, comments, and suggestions in Google Docs; it extracts the main text content.
• Connector data retrieved in a conversation is stored on Anthropic's servers with the associated chat. Anthropic says it does not train its models on Gmail, Drive, or Calendar connector data; its help page separately notes consumer training settings can affect copied or pasted connector-derived content.

Why this changes the workflow

Gmail and Drive are where many work requests begin: an email thread contains the decision, a Drive document contains the source material, and the final artifact needs to be saved back into the same workspace. Direct actions let Claude move between those steps without requiring users to copy every piece of context into the chat.

The safer pattern is still staged execution. Start with search and summarization, use a test folder or draft for the first write, and keep approval enabled for outbound email and file-management actions until the workflow is predictable. The official documentation describes the available connector actions, but it does not promise that a multi-step request will always be completed correctly without review.

Bottom line

Claude's Gmail and Google Drive connectors now support meaningful write actions: sending or replying to email, plus sharing, moving, trashing, uploading, and saving files in Drive. Anthropic's documentation makes the feature more useful to evaluate than the short launch post alone because it spells out approvals, admin controls, permissions, and limitations. Connect one account, start with reversible tasks, and review every outbound action while you learn the boundaries.
