Claude Duet: Anthropic's Proactive Agent App, Who Gets It, and How It Compares to ChatGPT dots

By 10 min read

Claude Duet is a research preview of a proactive agent app from Anthropic, running on Claude Opus 5.5 in its own cloud computer. It sends a morning brief, checks connected apps every few hours, and asks before it sends, pays, signs, or deletes. Access is by waitlist for US Pro and Max subscribers, inside existing usage limits.

Claude Duet is Anthropic's new proactive agent app, opened as a research preview on October 21, 2026: Claude comes to you with what needs attention, takes tasks by message, keeps working when you step away, and checks with you before it acts. (Anthropic's announcement) Our verdict: join the waitlist if you are a US Pro or Max subscriber whose day runs through email, calendar, Slack and invoices; skip it as a coding tool, because it cannot touch your local files and Claude Code already covers repository work.

Key Takeaways

  • It is a separate app, not a Claude mode. Duet is a standalone app on iOS and Android, and on claude.ai, and for now it lives apart from the main Claude app. (Anthropic)
  • Access is narrow. It is a waitlist research preview for Pro and Max users in the US; Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet. (Claude Help Center)
  • No extra charge, but it spends your limits. Duet uses the five-hour session and weekly limits at the same rate as chat, and its background checks count too. (Claude Help Center)
  • One model, no picker. Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and decides how much effort a job needs. (Claude Help Center)
  • Approval gates sit on four actions. It waits for you before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything. (Anthropic)
  • It polls rather than watches. Duet checks connected accounts every few hours, so something urgent can land between checks. (Anthropic)

Who Should Act and What to Do Now

Duet is a waitlist preview, so the practical question is whether to sign up today. The table gives the call by reader.

Anthropic says joining does not guarantee a date, since invitations go out in waves, and access is tied to the email address you give on the waitlist. (Claude Help Center)

What Claude Duet Does

Duet is an agent you message the way you would message a person, by typing or voice, in one ongoing thread. Each morning it sends a short brief on the most important items across your connected apps; through the day it messages you only when something needs your attention, and you can tell it what you want to hear about and how often. (Anthropic)

Larger jobs come back as files. The Help Center lists a research brief, a financial model, a slide deck, or a dashboard, with finished work in a Make tab and in-progress work in a Tasks tab. (Claude Help Center) Anthropic's examples include finding missed Gmail and Slack messages, checking QuickBooks or Stripe for unpaid invoices, preparing payroll in Gusto, and sending agreements for signature through Docusign. (Anthropic)

Setup is light because Duet carries over your memory, skills, and connected apps from your Claude account. It can also search your past Claude chats outside projects, controlled by the same Search and reference chats setting as Claude. (Claude Help Center)

How It Runs: Opus 5.5 on Its Own Cloud Computer

Duet has a virtual machine with its own browser, so it does not need your laptop or phone to be on. You describe a task, it works out which apps and steps to use in the background, and you get a notification when the task is complete or needs review. (Anthropic)

The model is fixed: Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and decides how much effort a job needs, and you cannot pick another model. For sites without a connector it uses its own cloud browser, but you cannot watch it work there or take over that browser. (Claude Help Center)

Anthropic says Duet can use the over 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace. The Help Center adds two caveats: some connectors, such as Slack, work with limits in Duet, and Microsoft 365 isn't available yet. (Anthropic; Claude Help Center)

The Approval and Safety Model

Duet reads, drafts, and prepares work on its own, but before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything, it shows you exactly what it is about to do and waits for approval. If you cannot approve right away, it finishes the rest of the task and brings the approval back later. (Anthropic; Claude Help Center)

Some actions are blocked even with your approval: trading securities, moving money between accounts, and accessing someone else's account. Duet also doesn't make phone calls or send text messages to other people. (Claude Help Center)

The safeguards borrow from Anthropic's developer products. Credential handling follows the Claude Managed Agents design, so Duet never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens, and actions are approved by the auto mode classifier that also protects Claude Code. Anthropic also added a dedicated classifier that rejects requests to share the strictest tier of information, including credit card numbers and government identification. (Anthropic)

Payments go through Link, Stripe's digital wallet, or Shop Pay. Each purchase uses a one-time card that only works for that purchase, and Duet can't pay with Link until you approve the amount in the Link app. (Claude Help Center; Link by Stripe with Claude Duet)

Prompt injection is the honest risk. The Help Center says Duet treats what it reads as information, but no defense is perfect, which is one reason consequential actions need your approval. Read every approval card rather than tapping through. (Claude Help Center)

Claude Duet vs ChatGPT dots vs Claude Code Scheduled Tasks

Duet arrives as a rival to OpenAI's dots, and CNBC says it will likely challenge both dots and Meta's Muse. (CNBC) For developers the closer comparison is Claude Code's cloud scheduled tasks, which already run unattended on Anthropic's cloud but against repositories. (Claude Code docs)

The biggest practical gap is local access. Your dot has its own cloud computer, and access to your local computer is optional and starts turned off; Duet offers no such switch and can't see the files on your computer. (OpenAI Help Center; Claude Help Center) If you want scheduled agent work on code, use cloud scheduled tasks, formerly Claude Code Routines.

Billing differs too. OpenAI says your first dot is included in your Pro or Business Premium plan at no extra cost, with an allowance for deeper work, while Duet shares your plan's usage limits with the rest of Claude. (OpenAI Help Center; Anthropic)

How Developers Might Use It

Duet is built for work around the code, not the code itself. Anthropic says Boris Cherny, who leads the Claude Code team, talks through his mental to-do list with Duet on walks. Karan Ahuja, who leads the Duet team, uses it to schedule user interviews, partner on prototypes, and even ship code. (Anthropic)

Reasonable first tasks for a developer or founder:

  • Triage: "Clear out anything in my inbox that I don't need to read." (Claude Help Center)
  • Billing chores: check Stripe for unpaid invoices and draft reminders for you to approve.
  • Meeting prep: a brief on a company before a call, pulled from your calendar and email.
  • Dashboards: a one-page view built from the tools you have connected.

Keep repository changes, reviews, and CI work in Claude Code, where you control the environment and permissions.

What Is Still Unknown

Anthropic has not said what Duet will cost after the research preview, when Team and Enterprise access arrives, or when the preview expands beyond the US. It says it will share more details about Duet's safety design in the coming days. (Anthropic) We found no Duet-specific data retention page; the Help Center does say that disconnecting an app stops further access but keeps memory of past information from earlier conversations. (Claude Help Center)

Anthropic also lists its own early weaknesses: Duet still might misread a thread or miscalibrate what is urgent, personal errands such as booking tickets aren't quite as strong, and it can't yet show you its browser. (Anthropic)

Verdict

Join the Claude Duet waitlist if you are a US Pro or Max subscriber and most of your non-coding hours go to email, calendar, invoices and follow-ups; the morning brief and approval gates are the parts worth testing. Hold off if you are on Team or Enterprise, outside the US, or already hitting your weekly limit, and keep using Claude Code for anything that touches a repository.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Claude Duet?

Claude Duet is a separate Anthropic app where Claude works as a proactive agent. It reads your connected apps, sends a short morning brief, messages you when something needs attention, takes tasks by text or voice, and keeps working on its own cloud computer after you close the app.

Who can get Claude Duet?

Pro and Max subscribers in the US, through a waitlist that admits people in waves. Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet. The app runs on iOS and Android, and on a computer you open it at claude.ai. Use the same email on the waitlist as on your Claude account.

How much does Claude Duet cost?

Nothing extra during the research preview. It is included in Pro and Max, but it draws on the same five-hour and weekly usage limits as chat, and background work such as the morning brief counts too. Admitted users get one full limit reset, available until November 30, 2026.

Does Claude Duet act without asking?

It reads, drafts, and prepares work on its own, but it is designed to show you what it will do and wait for approval before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything. Trading securities and moving money between accounts are blocked even with approval.

How is Claude Duet different from ChatGPT dots?

Both are always-on agents with their own cloud computer. Duet runs on Claude Opus 5.5, is US-only on Pro and Max via waitlist, and uses your plan limits. Dots run on GPT-6 Astra, reach Pro outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK plus Business Premium, and offer Enterprise an admin-enabled beta that is off by default.
